The Ultimate Photoshoot Checklist For Engagement & Couple Photos

So often do my clients tell me something along the lines of, “We’ve never taken professional photos before.” or “We’re awkward in front of the camera!” Trust me, I get it. Being in front of the camera for an engagement or couples photoshoot can feel a bit awkward. If you can relate, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. If you book with me, I’ll make sure your photo session feels comfy and your photos turn out spectacular! Hopefully this checklist prepares you for your next photoshoot and calms down any nerves. And before we get into it, you’ll be fine. I promise!

First Things First: Location, Date, & Time

Location: Chances are, you and your partner already have an idea of the type of vibe you both want for your couples photoshoot. Prefer a romantic coastal beach setting or a quiet, open field with a natural, whimsical feel? The choice is yours! If you’re in San Diego or planning a visit, I’ve got plenty of great photo location ideas to share for both vibes.

Date: I won’t talk much about this one since it’s really determine by your availability, but just keep in mind that weekends typically get booked up the fastest.

Time: Golden hour (about an hour before sunrise or sunset) is typically the best time for photos. That warm, soft light is flattering and adds a beautiful glow, which is why you’ll often see photographers out in full force, especially at popular beaches. I love shooting during golden hour and into blue hour (the short time just after the sun sets). However, don’t worry if your session falls during full daylight! Your photographer can still create stunning images no matter the time of day.

What To Wear, What To Wear

Now the fun part! Okay, maybe finding an outfit for your couples shoot can be a little stressful (especially if you’re like me and never know what to wear). Below are a few tips to help you pick out an outfit that not only photographs well but also feels like you. Let’s get started.

  • Tip #1: Pick something from your closet. I totally get the desire to go to the nearest mall and purchase a new outfit for your photoshoot. That’s cool too! But hear me out. Choosing something you already own is not only free, but it’s probably something you feel good in and have worn before. And that comfort shows on camera.
  • Tip #2: Movement is key and looks great in photos! If possible, go for outfits that aren’t too tight. Try jumping, dancing, and even running in your outfit beforehand to see how it moves with you.
  • Tip #3: Neutrals + maybe a small pop of color are your friend. Earthy tones are also great. Keep your location and background in mind when picking your outfit! If you’re doing your engagement or couples photos in a lush, green forest, try to avoid wearing the same shade of green as the trees. Instead, choose colors that complement the scenery, not blend into it.
  • Tip #4: Lastly, don’t be afraid to layer up. Jackets, scarves, sweaters, etc., can help to add dimension to your photos. Adding or removing layers also gives you two looks to choose from without actually having to change into another outfit.

The Build-up Before your Photoshoot

Anticipation is high. Maybe you’re starting to second-guess why you booked this photoshoot in the first place. Here are some things you can do leading up to your photoshoot to ease those nerves!

  • Create a mood board on Pinterest. I’m a big fan of them and will 100% be open to collaborating on yours. While we won’t copy the poses exactly so that your photos are unique to you, mood boards give me a good idea of what direction to take your photoshoot.
  • Feel free to send me a few of your outfit options if you’re having trouble deciding! I’ll give you my honest thoughts and recommendations.

On Your Photoshoot Day: Tips To Feel More Comfortable In Front Of The Camera

I always aim to make your photoshoot feel more like a fun, laid-back date that I just happen to be third wheeling, rather than a formal session. When we shoot together, I’ll guide you with prompts like “walk toward me” or “give her a spin”. My main goal is to capture the genuine moments between you and your partner in between these prompts!

  • Tip #1: When in doubt, laugh it out. If you start to feel a little awkward or nervous, just look at your partner and share a laugh. These photos always turn out cute!
  • Tip #2: Don’t worry about staying still or silent while I’m clicking away on my camera. Talk, laugh, hang out, have fun! I’ll be moving around and capturing things from all kinds of angles, and I promise I won’t include any mid-sentence shots.
  • Tip #3: Keep moving! Movement = good.
  • Tip #4: Trust your photographer. I promise no one is judging you. I’m here to hype you up and make sure you don’t look weird (you don’t!).

Now that you’ve got all the tips and info to feel prepared for your couples session, I’d love to help you capture it whenever you’re ready. You can contact me here! I’m sooo excited to create with you!
